A Qualitative Research on the Parenting Experiences and Needs of Families of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in China

Abstract
The study focuses on the primary caregivers of autism spectrum disorders in China. The purpose of this study was to understand and find needs in supporting through the qualitative investigation of these families' experiences and difficulties. For the purpose of the study, a total of 12 primary caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders were participated in focus group interviews. Four themes and thirteen sub-themes were emerging from the qualitative analysis of the interviews transcripts. The themes are the flowing. (1) experience in early detection of disability, (2) experience in diagnosis and intervention, (3) difficulties in family's life, (4) needs in the support for families. Based on the result of the findings, the study discussed the direction of the support for families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The results of this study should provide the basis data for cooperation in the field of special education between Korea and China in the future.
